Bees, Biodiversity and The Senator Group

The Senator Group

The Senator Group is a family-owned, independently run, global design-led business. As one of the world’s largest designers and manufacturers their core purpose is to design furniture that improves the lives of their customers.

For 45 years The Senator Group have remained independent. This enables them to grow sustainably, taking long-erm decisions to invest in people, projects, and the community. This includes sustainable design and manufacture that reduces negative environmental impacts and maximises positive opportunities.

This deep-rooted commitment to CSR has enabled the organisation to drive a challenging programme of sustainability measures including net zero, lifecycle-led design and manufacture, waste avoidance and minimisation and, of course, enhancing biodiversity.

Supporting Biodiversity

The Senator Group recognises that their business has both a direct and indirect impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

As part of their programme to support biodiversity, the organisation has engaged with The Bee Centre to find ways of enhancing opportunities for bees and other pollinators both on and off-site. The Bee Centre is the home of sustainable and ethical beekeeping in the UK and a centre of excellence for bee-related breeding, husbandry and education.

Part of this programme includes the installation of honeybee hives at the organisation’s head office near Burnley. The hives are home to British honeybees which are specially bred by The Bee Centre and are based on our native dark bee (Apis mellifera mellifera). These bees have been locally adapted to be resilient and well suited to local seasonality and habitats. The bees are busy pollinating wild flowers and crops to enhance our natural environment.

In 2024 the site will also develop a large biodiversity area which will support a variety of bumblebee and solitary bee species as well as other pollinators, invertebrates, plants, birds and small mammals.
